Political Roundtable On Elections

United States Congressman Brian Higgins, New York State Assemblyman Bill Parment and Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards took part in a political roundtable Monday afternoon entitled “Restoring Legitimacy to our Election System”. But it was not so much the restoration of legitimacy to the election system that was analyzed, but the restoration of focus to the process.
The roundtable was held at the Chautauqua Institution’s Hall of Philosophy and was moderated by former Lieutenant Governor Stan Lundine.
Higgins said that the legitimacy of the system is often difficult to measure because it is the nature of the process that an individual’s sense of legitimacy is closely tied to actual election results. “The legitimacy of the process,” he noted, “is often determined by the outcome.”
Parment said that the legitimacy of the system is derived from the electorate accepting the outcome and moving forward. “There’s not a precedent when the results
