Geothermal Getting A Look
Just how efficient is the geothermal system that heats and cools buildings contained in the Impact Warren Project area? That’s a question Nina Baird hopes to answer within the next year. Baird, a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, is monitoring the efficiency of the innovative “open loop” geothermal system for her doctoral dissertation in architecture. She has been traveling to Warren since last December to set up metering of the system’s efficiency in the Allegheny Point and Liberty West buildings. Baird’s impression thus far? “This could be a really good alternative to buildings heated by a lot of combustion,” Baird said. “There are so many things that make sense. I was intrigued by it. I’m hoping (her data) will find it would make a lot of sense to duplicate this. You couldn’t do it everywhere.
