BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say a member of a New York community college's women's basketball and softball teams has died after a two-vehicle crash on an upstate road.

A statement issued by the State University of New York's Broome Community College in Binghamton says Miranda Gifford, of Rome in Oneida County, died Wednesday.

Authorities say the freshman homeland security major was injured early Monday afternoon when her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a service vehicle in Oxford in Chenango County, north of Binghamton.

She was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where officials says she died late Wednesday night.

Two people riding in the truck weren't injured.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Gifford played guard for SUNY Broome, which lost its season opener Wednesday night at home to Schenectady County Community College.
