'Monk' star Tony Shalhoub's 'irresistible' Broadway musical

November 7, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) — Tony Shalhoub (shuh-LOOB) is a master of accents, playing Italians, Germans, Greeks, Hispanics and Russians during his TV, stage and film career — even an alien in "Men in Black."

So it's no surprise that he returns to Broadway on Thursday in "The Band's Visit" for a role that requires an Egyptian accent.

The musical is about an Egyptian orchestra that travels to Israel but ends up in the wrong town. While his use of accents is nothing new, Shalhoub is trying something different — singing. It's his first musical.

The Lebanese-American actor grew up in a multicultural community ripe with accents in Green Bay, Wisconsin, hence his knack with dialects. He recalls imitating the sounds of Poles, Germans and Scandinavians as a kid.
