Granny's Greetings

POSTED: May 15, 2008

By HELEN G. BENSINK

May I welcome you to another week of sunshine and flowers? May I ask you to take notice of the blossoming, blooming, everything that has suddenly come into sight once again? How about those dandelions? Aren’t they the most gorgeous brightest yellow you have ever laid your eyes on? Wow! Our whole front lawn is the most beautiful blanket of yellow one cannot help but see the beauty in this weed. Let us enjoy this fabulous array of color. Did you ever think how dull your life would be without color? Some of us are even mindful when all of television was in black and white. Photographs, too. My oh my, what a wonderful world of discoveries for us to be living in. I am grateful…can you tell?

With all the talk about the way prices are going up and up on everything these days, I would like to share these thoughts with you today. “Return On Investment”…Long after whatever personal investments you may leave your children are spent, spiritual legacy will only compound daily and pay rich dividends throughout all eternity. The man who leaves only a financial inheritance for his children leaves them poor. But the man who leaves a spiritual legacy for his family, whatever size his financial inheritance may be, leaves them rich. Steven J. Lawson.

Remind your teenager that on Saturday, May 31st the Teens On Fire youth group life-event will be held from 2 to 10 p.m. at Camp Findley and everyone is invited to attend. There will be music, speakers, drama, food, fellowship, a fun-day filled with activities concentrating on life issues teens will face as they balance freedom with responsibility…what does the Bible say? Cost-free! Reservation by May 24th, contact Lucinda Legters at 355-2206 or Scott Bensink at 769-7906. Why not take a friend or a carload and plan to attend?

Has anyone played Ladder Golf as yet? We were fortunate enough to know a man who makes them and sells them. This is a terrific outdoor game with lots of laughs as you fling the golf balls at the designated target built in the form of a ladder, and get points for hitting different areas. Hubby even has the measurements so that you could make your own if you would so desire. Any age person can play and we found it to be a very nice way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Vacation Bible School news: This year we are going to try something new and different. We, the Clymer Hill Reformed Church, will be uniting with the Abbe Reformed Church and having our Bible School together. The joint VBS will be held at the Abbe on July 6th through July 10th. July 6th will start at 6:15 for registration and go until 8:30 p.m. and go 6:30 to 8:30 the rest of the week. Everyone please sign up to help. We need YOU. Any questions may be referred to Kathy Julia Heiser at 355-4108. There will be information as the time draws nearer.

It has been interesting to note that since Hubby and I have been going back and forth from our camp the past few weeks, we have observed that there still were a few places where you could see snow on the ground as you drove near the Peek ‘N Peak ski resort. It laid on the side of the slopes nearby the tree line and must have been a bit more there than other places. However, this week we noticed it has finally gone. Totally. So, guess there is no more skiing until next winter, folks. You may as well put the ski equipment away for awhile and give this idea a rest. Golf, anyone?

Pastors Mike and Erin Beckerink were out of town on Monday and Tuesday, May 5th and 6th as they were our Rochester Classis delegates at the Regional Synod of the Reformed Churches held in Mohawk, New York. We appreciate their taking time out of their busy lifestyle to go forth and do this for us. Bring us home the good news, please. Looking forward to hearing your report when you return.

So how did you spend that precious holiday better known as Mother’s Day? Hopefully you were surrounded by those you love and made to feel the “special” person that you are. Being a mother is so special. I feel that it is an honorable spot to be in. I realize that not every woman has this opportunity and thus they may find other ways of becoming a mother such as adoption. Our daughter has had this privilege and I also have a niece who has done so, even though she does have children she has given birth to. Believe me the rewards are great and many. Perhaps you could think of doing the same and becoming mother to someone else’s child, helping this dear child to grow up having a real mother and a family to become a part of.

We were delighted on Sunday as we celebrated Harold’s eightieth birthday with an Open House in his honor at the Clymer Hill Reformed Church. We counted eighty some guests, as there were several children outside at the play area. Yes, indeed, Hubby was pleased to have so many folks come to see him and make his day even more special. Our party was a delightful one and all arrangements were made by our children, Lynnette and Clare of Monroe Falls, Ohio; Brian and Terri Bensink of Clymer; Connie Christensen and her friend Bill, of North East, Pa and Wendy Heslink of Clymer. Needless to say we were overwhelmed at the folks who came and there were many who we have not seen in years. We were discussing this later and spoke of how some of these friends went way back to our schooldays and were friends that we double-dated with, roller skated with, traveled with, camped with, square danced with, neighbored with and attended church with over all these marvelous years. Hubby received many lovely cards and gifts and was truly overjoyed with each and every one who attended. We had children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren there. I am certain that this was a day that neither of us shall forget and it warmly touched our hearts. Please know how thankful we are for it all and yes, indeed, it was a very Happy Eightieth Birthday. Thanks be to God.

I would like to mention how it warms my heart to see how this community gets behind the families who are in need now that theirs has been stricken with some sort of illness or handicap. One can’t help but notice that there are signs put up, notices included with our church bulletins, cans with names on in the various business places where one can contribute at any time, items for sale such as bracelets with the victims name on it, and requests for prayer even at certain time of day and on the same day of the week continually. We also like to have the list of prayer need put in the church bulletin each week. So if you so desire and have a request, just talk with your pastor and let him know your needs. Perhaps we could be praying for you.

We are still looking for people to walk and push babies in old fashioned buggies in the Tulip Festival Parade on Saturday, May 17th. If you are available please contact Mindy White at 355-4299.

Better practice a bit walking in those wooden shoes. Believe me, if they are the right size and with socks on, they can be comfortable. The secret is to let your foot rock forward with the shoe, I think. That seems to work well for me, anyways.

Don’t forget to but the just-published cookbook entitled, “At the End of the Fork” from your local businessmen. This project has 350 recipes from our local cooks and sells for $8.00. The Clymer Community Foundation is selling them and all proceeds fund current and future projects of the Foundation. These books are a wonderful gift for that certain someone and aim to please when you eat the goodies that are found in this treasured book. Truly a keepsake, I do believe.

We are happy to see Bruce Tenpas walking without his crutches these days. He has been suffering at the knee from an accident at work and may we continue to ask the good Lord for the proper healing of his injury.

I think that perhaps I had better go and write some letters as I have discovered that in order to receive them you need to write them. Isn’t that just simply amazing?

Til next time, Luv, GRANNY
