Over The Backyard Fence

Spring is here and folk are busy getting their gardens ready for planting. The village of Sherman and surrounding area is well supplied with flowers and vegetable plants for everyone’s garden. One of my favorites is the Miller’s Greenhouse located next door to us on Rt. 76 south of Sherman. It is filled with all kinds of beautiful annual flowers and also numerous vegetable plants.
I have enjoyed just looking at all the beauty in the Miller’s greenhouse and especially the aroma of pansies that greets one as they enter the new addition on the front of the building. The couple has many kinds of bedding plants including petunias, dianthus, coleus, snapdragons, geraniums, sweet alyssum, begonias and more. Flats are $11 and six packs $3. There is a variety of lovely hanging baskets ranging from $8 to $18. There are also numerous vegetable plants and cemetery pots. I can stop in whenever I get the urge; visit with Clara, enjoy the flowers, and purchase what I want for that day. They are open Monday - Saturday.
Another good place to purchase annual flowers in the Sherman area is at Sherman Central School. The FFA has numerous including bedding plants and hanging baskets. The baskets include million bells, double impatiens, mixed baskets, and begonias. Bedding plants include coleus, impatiens, petunias, dianthus, snapdragons, marigolds, pansies and fuchsias. There will also be vegetables available June 1 and possibly gourd birdhouses.
Proceeds from the school greenhouse go to the FFA students for trips and other special activities. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 Monday - Friday.
Other village businesses that have flowers for sale are: Macks Hometown Grocery, Sherman Hardware, and The Farmer’s Mill. Those stores also carry other garden and home products to enhance ones yard during the spring and summer seasons.
It seems like the outdoor beauty that surrounds us arrived earlier than it does in many years. It was as if it came in celebration of Mother’s Day. I trust all you moms enjoyed that special day as much as I did. I was richly blessed by our children’s visits, cards and gifts. We enjoyed having barbequed chicken dinners at the South Ripley fire department building with Francis Vidal, Todd, Kimberly and family. I was also blessed Saturday when I attended a ladies tea with my daughter Debbie, granddaughter Tonya, and her daughters Britney and Ally. It was held in the North East Baptist church for mothers, daughters and all ladies.
Kim, Gayle, Chad, Nikole, Dylan, and Jada Cole spent the past weekend in Anderson Indiana. Friday evening they attended the Kinesiology Department Reception in honor of the graduates in that department. Their son and brother Cyle, and his fiancée Brittney, were among that number. They also attended their graduation on Saturday. Both of the graduates received BA degrees in physical education. They will be at home with their respective parents until their wedding on June 7.
