BUFFALO - Jessica Fortney of Chautauqua Lake was named the first runner-up at the state Distinguished Young Women competition Saturday night at Buffalo State College's Rockwell Hall.

Fortney also received a scholastic award and a talent award.

When Fortney was named the Distinguished Young Woman of the Lakewood Area in December, she became the first to receive the honor from Chautauqua Lake Central School. At the time, Fortney was very excited to represent the area at the state competition, being named the winner nearly a month after the competition had ended, when the original winner stepped down.

"I was very surprised. It's such a privilege," Fortney said of being chosen as the local winner. "I had accepted the fact that I took second. It took me a while to finally realize that I was the new winner."

Fortney plans to explore a career in physics or engineering after high school. The National Honor Society member and two-sport varsity athlete chose to perform a piano instrumental for her talent presentation at the Reg Lenna Civic Center on Nov. 5 in the local competition. She is the daughter of Brian and June Fortney of Mayville.
