Dear Editor,

Many Westfield citizens and visitors have come to the Reed Pier this past summer and fall and have noted the improvements made to the pier.

Much of this was accomplished under a grant from the Department of State, Division of Coastal Management. The rest was from Town funds set aside for beachfront improvement. The improvements include a new pavilion added to the existing central building. The public bathrooms were completely renovated. More picnic tables have been placed for use by our many visitors. The vast majority of the various Pier improvements have been accomplished by our own town workers.

Consistent with our Waterfront Opportunity Plan (soon to be part of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan or LWRP), new designer light poles with energy efficient LED lights were added. The poles were installed by the Westfield Electric Department through Shared Services between the Town and Village. Through competitive bidding a contract with Time Warner Cable allowed us to add high-speed Internet access providing Internet WIFI as well as enhancing our pier camera (go to and link to the camera). Local weather is also an available link. Security cameras have been installed as well.

Other additions include adding a "foot-wash" to one side of the building. Our docks have migrated from wood to all-aluminum. More bollards and chain, to attractively mark off parking areas, are on hand for installation this spring. Many visitors enjoy our pier, under the direction of Harbor Master Kelly Brown. In addition to our famed Barcelona Lighthouse, the ship Sea Lion is always a popular attraction.

Even in the winter there is majestic scenery at the pier. Come and enjoy it.
