Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Recently the Westfield Town Board completed the purchase of a piece of land at the entry by Chautauqua Creek and Route 5. Due to limited safe parking we believed this acquisition was critical to the many fishermen and recreational visitors who frequent the location. Through the cooperation of the Board of the Moose Lodge 118 of Westfield, the Town was able to obtain a lot suitable for parking up to 15 cars. Our Town workers are planning on preparing the lot this spring.

Some years ago the Town Board traded land on Coon Road for roughly 7 acres along Chautauqua Creek, which included the beachfront from the mouth of the creek to Moose Beach. In our long-term vision of public access and enjoyment, we now have a wonderful path along the creek leading to the beach. Having the parking issue solved is a great step forward.

A previous DEC study concluded that the economic impact of Lake Erie's tributaries is important with an estimated $26 (in 2004) per person spent in the local economy. Money is spent in local convenience stores, restaurants, motels, Bed & Breakfasts, and fishing gear stores, etc. The 11-year old study showed that hundreds of fishermen from nearby counties, other states and Canada, come in the fall and spring to enjoy the steelhead and Brown Trout fishing. In this particular study the highest catch-rate per hour, of the eight major tributaries, was in Chautauqua Creek.

In recent meetings of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP), Chautauqua Creek is identified as being an important part of future planning. The Town will seek assistance from the NY State Department of Transportation in contributing resources to the new parking facility, as the lot will alleviate the dangerous parking along Route 5 that was evident in the past. This project is just one more of the recent accomplishments that we believe make the Westfield experience a better one for everyone.
