Moseyin’ Along

The latest collection of wit and wisdom

If you've been Moseyin' Along with me for a while, you know my favorite word is Serendipity. Writer Horace Walpole coined the word in 1754 in his fairy tale, The Princes of Serendip.

The story, briefly, was taken from a Persian tale of three princes who traveled the world, making valuable discoveries by accident.

Thus, serendipity has come to mean, "the effect by which one accidentally stumbles upon something wonderful while looking for something entirely unrelated."

Using that definition as my guide, I've gathered quotations, sayings and phrases into collections I call my Serendipity Books.

From time to time, when I'm seeking an infusion of wit or wisdom, I take the books off the shelf and revisit the words that have made me smile or caused me to stop and think for a moment.

As we begin this new month, I've decided the time has come to share some of my favorites with you, my Moseyin' Friends. If some of these inspire you to recall your own favorites, please take a minute to share them with me. I'd love to add them to my ongoing collection.

"Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack." "Don't let your struggle become your identity." "Storms make trees take deeper roots." Dolly Parton Sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places. "Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong." Old Wyoming Rancher's advice. "You cannot unsay a cruel word."

"No one is in charge of your happiness but you."

"You were born an original. Don't die a copy."

"Take time to wave or wink at a child."

"Envy is a waste of time. " "You already have all you really need. It's ok to get angry with God. He can take it." "When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile." Don't compare your life with others. You have no idea what their journey is all about." "Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once." "It may be that your sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others." "It's OK to let your children see you cry." "Never buy a car you can't push."

What this country needs is more unemployed Politicians. My newest goal is to be a person who is HBN: Horizontal By Nine. The best sermons are lived, not preached. And several of my favorites quotes came from Mary Crowley, founder of Home Interiors and Gifts. Among them:

"Success is like housework, it's so daily! You have to do it all over again every morning."

"There is plenty of room at the top, but no room to sit down."

On her calling card:

"Every morning, lean thine arm a while upon the window sill of heaven and gaze upon thy God. Then, with that vision in thine heart, turn strong to meet the day."

If you have some favorite quotes or notes of wit and wisdom, please send them along. Eventually I'll put together another collection of your favorites. Thanks!
