Youth Symphony has Chautauqua weekend

April 16, 2015
Westfield Republican

Every spring the Youth Symphony, the premier orchestra of the Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS), spends an overnight at Chautauqua Institution.

At this "Chautauqua Weekend" these highly talented and motivated high school and college musicians have full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals with coaches, and a wrap-up demonstration. They also enjoy a pizza party and camaraderie as part of their stay at Bellinger Hall.

The 2015 event was held this past weekend, April 10-11, under the leadership of CRYS's acclaimed conductor and music director Bryan Eckenrode. In addition to Eckenrode, professional music instructors Derek Chazen, Amy Cross, Brian Hornbuckle, Nina Karbacka, and Sue Tillotson coached the students.

The students in the Youth Symphony of the Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS) just completed a weekend of intensive study and rehearsals at Chautauqua Institution. Pictured here are some of the violinists at a rehearsal in Chautauqua’s Elizabeth S. Lenna Hall.

Board members who helped with the weekend's activities included Katie Derrenbacher, Sara Flaherty and Michelle Carlson, assisted by her husband, Nathaniel Carlson, as well as CRYS Manager Julia Herman.

Significant funding for the Chautauqua Weekend was provided by a grant from the Blossom Fund of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. The Blossom Fund also provided a grant in support of Maestro Eckenrode's honorarium.

The intensive experience was a preparation for the Youth Symphony's performance at their Spring Gala Concert on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. in the Reg Lenna Center for The Arts.

Featured as well at the Spring Gala will be CRYS's Prelude Strings of beginning string players and the Young Artists Orchestra of intermediate musicians.
