Grant for music at Westfield Academy and Central School

April 16, 2015
Westfield Republican

Westfield Academy and Central School's (WACS) Friends of Education Fund is a partnership of Parent Connection and the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation with a mission to invest in and support children's overall educational experience. In March of 2014, the fund received a $5,000 Trustee's Discretionary Grant from the Western New York (WNY) Foundation to be used for the Music Department. This grant was awarded in recognition of WACS music teacher Kent Knappenberger's 2014 Music Educator Award given by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation.

This grant is designated to benefit the WACS Music Department and managed through the Friends of Education Fund. The music department chose to purchase needed musical equipment with the award money. This new equipment allows more students to participate in lessons, school performances, and regional musical programs.

A WNY Foundation Trustee commented, "It is a rare day when one musical educator from a small rural community is selected to receive national recognition of this level of prominence. Mr. Knappenberger's prowess as a teacher and one of the reasons that he won this award, is that his teaching centers not only on excellence in music, but also on the inclusion of students of all levels of ability in his programs." The Western New York Foundation, incorporated in 1951, makes grants in the seven counties of Western New York State: Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua.

The Friends of Education Fund exists for the purpose of improving the educational experiences of students by investing in special programs, initiatives, capital projects and other items needed within the school district. The money raised is directed toward areas that cannot be adequately supported without private funding.
