Letters to the Editor

June 18, 2015
Westfield Republican

Dear Editor,

Every person that has ever worn the uniform of our nation's Armed Forces understands that by doing so we signed a blank check in our blood to the United States of America. Fortunately most of us did not have those checks cashed, but, many of us make it our duty to never forget those that did.

During my service in the US Navy I learned that it is a dereliction of duty to abandon your post, I also learned that the Congressional Medal of Honor is not earned but awarded and recipients deserve the highest respect possible. The slogan for the Submarine Service is "Pride Runs Deep" and I was proud to participate in the Memorial Day Services including the parade, I attended the Cushing Medal of Honor reception at the McClurg Mansion on Saturday night. I did not see Mayor Vandevelde at either event, nor was anyone representing his office introduced at either event. The Mayor of Fredonia where Cushing was from, knew to pay his respects, he came to our village to do so and our mayor wasn't there. Knowing that our mayor is a fellow veteran of the US Navy I am extremely disappointed by his dereliction of duty at both events.

Mark Puckhaber,

Westfield
