Ex-director hopes church keeps kitchen

Dear Editor:

A number of years ago, I was privileged to be the director of Westfield Community Kitchen. It was conceived by Father Chip Elliot and has always been housed at Saint Peter's. It is however a community kitchen which rents space from the church.

Through grants to the kitchen, great improvements were made to the basement. The paved floor area was enlarged and shelves constructed to store food. The church has used a small portion of this new area. New pots, pans, slicer, Hobart mixer and other items were added by the Kitchen.

The church was generous in letting us use what was already there. It was centrally located which was important because many of the clients lived within walking distance and had no cars. It had become an ideal place for this endeavor.

Saint Peter's is no longer going to rent their facility to the kitchen. The Community Kitchen has 90 days, which will be up on Nov. 24, to find a new home. To relocate this worthy community outreach in this period of time seems a task of gargantuan proportion. It is a matter not just of finding a place with a dining area and a kitchen but an adequate storage area. Saint Peter's remains the ideal location. Hopefully, the church will be able to implement its new plans but also restructure them to include the housing of our Westfield Community Kitchen. Short of that, I would suggest the continued housing of the kitchen until a new home can be found with no time limit but good faith on both sides.
