MAYVILLE (Dec. 1)- Sophomore Devin Pope came within two points of tying the Chautauqua Lake record in boys basketball Tuesday night.

Pope scored 28 points on 14-of-21 shooting - two points shy of Chad Perdue's school record of 30 points - as the Thunderbirds rolled over non-league Pine Valley, 85-43.

Pope scored all of his points in three quarters.

"He was outstanding and also had six steals and five assists," said Chautauqua Lake coach Mike Putney, who sat Pope out in the final stanza.

Pope had 14 points in the first half, leading his team to a commanding 40-18 spread. He scored 14 points in the third quarter when Chautauqua Lake went on a 29-15 run.

Adam Swan chipped in with 16 points and four assists, Carter Davidson had seven assists, and Nate Hammond grabbed seven rebounds.

The hosts shot 38 of 71 for 56 percent from the field as they raised their record to 2-0. They also had 19 assists and 19 steals along the way.

"We had a very balanced attack," Putney said. "The biggest thing is the unselfish team play I have seen. Carter Davidson is our prime scorer and he only took six shots, but had seven assists. Devin Pope, as a sophomore, having 28 is great. He is unstoppable going to the hole when he wants to. They play well together as a team."

Dylan Chase topped Pine Valley with 13 points and Elijah Hall added 10 points.
