Maple Grove takes Sherman tourney; hosts win consolation game

SHERMAN - Elle Lockwood scored four points in overtime to give Maple Grove an exciting 34-31 victory over previously undefeated Falconer in the championship game of the Sherman Holiday Tournament on Saturday night.

The Red Dragons had tied things at 27-all in regulation on Alexis Hallberg's 3-pointer with less than a minute left. Then Maple Grove held an 8-4 overtime advantage to pull out the victory.

Maple Grove had just a single point for the first 12 minutes, but managed an 11-11 tie at halftime.

In the consolation game, Bridget Yaw sank two free throws with only 4.5 seconds remaining to assure Sherman's 33-30 victory over Cassadaga Valley.

Caleigh Swanson was the Most Valuable Player for Maple Grove (3-1) with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Falconer (3-1). Hallberg led the scoring with 12 points and Morgan Lehman added nine rebounds.

Also on the All-Tournament Team with Swanson and Hallberg of Maple Grove were Ashley Repine of Cassadaga Valley, Bridget Yaw of Sherman and Emma Steele of Falconer.

Kelly Keefe led Falconer with 13 points while Carter had 12 rebounds and Steele picked up six steals and six assists for Falconer.

Yaw wound up with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds for Sherman in its defeat of Cassadaga Valley. Yaw had eight points in a 16-4 run in the third quarter that put the Wildcats ahead, 29-21.

Roxanne Toy added nine rebounds while Jurnee Hannold had six steals.

Ashley Repine netted 13 points and 11 rebounds for Cassadaga Valley.
