(Dec. 18) - The Westfield Lady Wolverines pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Salamanca Lady Warriors, 33-17, in non-league girls basketball Friday night.

The visitors stayed close most of the way, trailing by a single point after one period, down 15-11 at halftime and still within seven after three quarters. But Westfield (3-3, 0-1) outscored Salamanca (1-5) 11-2 in the final quarter to seal the victory.

"It was definitely a defensive battle," Lady Wolverines coach Cody Jacobson said. "We held them to six points the entire second half. We threw a lot of defenses at them."

On offense, Jacobson said his team was frustrated by Salamanca's zone defense in the first half, but dealt with it better in the final two quarters. Still, he said his team's 11 free throws - including eight by Sophie DeMarco, who finished with a game-high 12 points - made a big difference.

"We shot just enough from the free throw line to build our lead. Offensively we missed some opportunities but we scored when we needed to," Jacobson said.

Andie Hill led the Lady Trojans with six points. Maddison Knapp chipped in seven points for the Lady Wolverines.

Lady Thunderbirds lose close one

MAYVILLE (Dec. 18) - The Falconer Lady Golden Falcons (4-2, 1-1) escaped Chautauqua Lake Central School with a 62-60 victory Friday in CCAA West 1 girls high school basketball.

Baileigh Carter shined for Falconer as she scored 28 points.

"She is a really good player," Chautauqua Lake coach Eric Schuster said. "It didn't matter where she caught it. Most of her points came away from the basket. She did a nice job. She has a nice turnaround jumper. Everything she put up fell for her."

The Lady Golden Falcons shot 17 of 31 from the foul line while the Lady Thunderbirds (1-5, 0-2) were just 5 of 12.

"We got into foul trouble," Schuster said. "We had four or five kids with five fouls. We have to clean it up on the defensive end. If you put a team on the line 31 times, that's tough to overcome."

The Lady Thunderbirds got off to a strong start as Taylor Phelps scored 10 points in the first quarter in leading the home team to a 20-17 lead.

However, from there, Falconer shut Phelps down as she scored five points - all in the third quarter - the rest of the way.

"They did a nice job at limiting her touches the rest of the way," Schuster said. "We wanted to pound it in the post and hope for a double down and kick out."

The Lady Golden Falcons tied the score, 29-all by halftime. And despite trailing 41-39 heading into the fourth quarter, Falconer found a way to prevail, outscoring Chautauqua Lake, 23-19 for the win.

Katelyn Fardink and Brittany Fardink combined for 23 points and Lakin Gustafson had 11 points and eight rebounds in defeat.

Clymer defeats Cassadaga Valley

CLYMER (Dec. 18) - Lauren Dunnewold and Libby Heil sparked a second-quarter run as Clymer (2-0, 3-4) trimmed Cassadaga Valley.

Dunnewold and Heil each scored six points in the 17-5 second quarter to give the Pirates a 27-14 lead at halftime en route to a 52-38 victory over Cassadaga Valley (0-2, 2-6).

In the second half, Cassadaga Valley got within three points before the hosts rebounded for a double-figure victory.

Heil led the Pirates with 16 points, Dunnewold had 13 and Becca King 10 for the winners. Heil also had 12 rebounds and Jessie Kibbe 10 for the Pirates.

Ashley Repine delivered 18 points, 16 rebounds and blocked six shots in the loss while teammate Jewelee Schauman had six steals and four assists. Repine had 14 points after intermission.

Lady Pirates top Westfield

(Dec. 15) - Becca King scored 13 points to lead the Clymer Lady Pirates to a 42-39 victory over Westfield (2-3) on Tuesday in CCAA West 2 girls high school basketball.

The Lady Wolverines held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, but Clymer held a slim 25-24 halftime advantage.

The Lady Pirates never trailed the rest of the way as they led 32-30 after three quarters.

"I think we came out flat and turned the ball over too much," Westfield coach Cody Jacobson said. "We didn't have our usual aggression. Clymer was very disciplined with the ball."

The Lady Wolverines had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but were unable to convert on a 3-point attempt.

Maddison Knapp had 12 points while Sophia DeMarco had 10 points and as many rebounds in a losing effort. Brenna Culbreth had 10 rebounds for Westfield.

Southwestern beats Chautauqua Lake

LAKEWOOD (Dec. 15) - Southwestern's five 3-pointers in the second quarter were a key to its 58-39 CCAA West 1 girls high school basketball win over Chautauqua Lake.

The Lady Trojans (3-2, 1-0) had six 3-pointers overall. Hayden Burgeson and Maddie Sullivan had two 3-pointers apiece and Sydney Burk added the fifth one while Sullivan tallied eight points in the 21-7 second quarter.

Chautauqua Lake (1-4, 0-1) whittled the margin to 11 points in the second half before the Lady Trojans eventually pulled out the 19-point win.

Sullivan finished with 16 points while Southwestern teammates Sally Rudny added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Diamond Fredrick had 11 points. Kendyl Austin also helped with seven rebounds.

Taylor Phelps had 16 points and Lakin Gustafson had 10 rebounds in defeat.
