basketball coach Bob North knew if he could get three players to score in double figures, his team would have a chance at winning any game this season.

The proof was evident Monday as David Grayson, Jonathan Wilson and Trevor North shined in leading the Wolverines (3-3, 1-1) to a 65-35 victory over Cassadaga Valley (0-7, 0-3) in CCAA West 2 boys high school basketball action.

"We talked about that, If we can get three guys in double figures, we will be a good team and we talked about that," North said. "Trevor has been consistent. Grayson and Wilson played real well. Wilson attacked the basket, as did David. That was a big plus for us."

Wilson led the way with 17 points while Grayson put in 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. North finished with 12 points in the win.

The Wolverines used a big first quarter, in which they outscored the visitors, 17-7. Holding on to a 41-29 lead heading into the final quarter, Westfield used a 22-6 run to put the game away.

"We were solid defensively," North noted. "We got back to the basics and played strong man-to-man. We took the shooting away from their guards, but they were finding guys on the weak-side block."

Benefiting from that were Tyler Simpson and Connor Crabtree as the Cougar forwards combined for 28 points.

Simpson also hauled down 10 rebounds while Brandon Chamberlin had 10 rebounds and six assists in a losing effort.

Brocton defeats

Pine Valley

SOUTH DAYTON (Dec. 21)- The Pine Valley Panthers (1-4) jumped out to a strong start, but it was all down hill from there as the Brocton Bulldogs (7-2) played strong in the final three quarters for a 41-35 victory Monday in non-league boys high school basketball.

The Panthers took a 12-6 lead after the opening eight minutes.

"We came out great," Pine Valley coach David Pihlblad said. "We were playing great defense and forced turnovers. We had a nice lead and I couldn't ask for better start. In the second quarter, we couldn't hit a shot and they played great defense."

However, from there, the visitors outscored Pine Valley, 35-19.

Not helping Pine Valley was the fact it shot just 1 of 15 from beyond the arc.

"We are generally a good shooting team," Pihlblad said. "We have been hitting those shots the past couple games. (Monday) was one of those nights. They packed in the paint and let our guys shoot, and we just couldn't hit an outside shot."

Steven Krystofiak led Brocton with 14 points while Garrett McFadden added 10 points in the win. Ryan Johnson, Aaron Riforgiato and Alec Chelton each pulled down six rebounds. Chelton also dished out nine assists.

The Panthers were led by Kilian Abers' 18 points and five rebounds. Gilberto Ortiz hauled down 12 boards in a losing effort.

The Hillbillies jumped out to a 33-19 lead after the first quarter, before taking a 56-41 lead into halftime. A 16-9 advantage in the third quarter put Fredonia up 72-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

Eric Swoyer added 24 points in the win while Jarod Burmaster had 11 points and eight assists. Also for Fredonia, Michael Pucci had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Thunderbirds were led by Devin Pope's 20 points while Aaron Swan had 17 points and six assists.
