Sherman loses in JCC?Holiday Tourney final

JAMESTOWN (Dec. 30) - Southwestern repeated as the girls basketball champions at the annual Jamestown Community College Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night.

''It was a total team effort,'' said Southwestern coach Anne Beck following the 47-24 victory over Sherman in the title game.

In the consolation game, Ellicottville prevailed over Cassadaga Valley, 54-34.

The all-tournament team was comprised of Diamond Fedrick and Maddie Sullivan from Southwestern, Bridget Yaw from Sherman, Marissa Hamilton from Ellicottville and Ashley Repine of Cassadaga Valley.

The Lady Trojans (7-3) jumped on top of Sherman, 12-3, in the first quarter and suddenly improved on that every quarter in the title matchup.

Fedrick got hot in the second half with 10 of her 14 points for the Lady Trojans, whose man-to-man defense gave Sherman trouble.

Sally Rudny and Fedrick grabbed eight rebounds while Kate Johnson and Sullivan had six assists for Southwestern. Kendyl Austin scored nine points in the win and Rudny wound up with six points .

Roxanne Toy had 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks while Jurnee Hannold added six rebounds for Sherman.

Yaw helps Lady Wildcats defeat Ellicottville

JAMESTOWN (Dec. 29) Red-hot shooting by Bridget Yaw carried Sherman (3-3) into the championship game of the Jamestown Community College Holiday Tournament against Southwestern.

Yaw scored 19 of her 22 points in the second half as the Lady Wildcats defeated Ellicottville, 37-30, in the first round.

Behind Yaw's second-half explosion, Sherman, which tailed 20-11 at halftime, was able to outscore Ellicottville, 26-13, in he final two quarters. Yaw also brought down 14 rebounds and Roxanne Toy added 10 rebounds and three assists.

Marissa Hamilton of Ellicottville had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Foul shooting carries

Westfield to road win

SALAMANCA (Jan. 4) - Foul shooting was the difference as Westfield defeated non-league Salamanca, 42-33, in girls basketball Monday night.

Westfield made 16 of 29 while Salamanca was only 5 of 15 from the free-throw line.

Brenna Culbreth made 10 of 16 en route to 12 points for Westfield.

Andie Hill had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Salamanca (1-7).

Lady Wolverines lose

to Maple Grove in Erie

ERIE, Pa. - The Maple Grove girls basketball team easily improved its record to 5-3 with a 51-8 non-league basketball victory over Westfield at the Erie Insurance Arena.

The Lady Red Dragons, who played prior to the Erie Bayhawks game, jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back.

Alexis Hallberg scored 11 points with three 3-pointers and Ellie Lockwood contributed eight points with a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line for Maple Grove. Morgan Lehman brought down 11 rebounds, while Lizzy Harrison grabbed nine rebounds.

Clymer nips Silver Creek

CLYMER - Clymer held off Silver Creek, 38-35, highlighted by Lauren Dunnewold's 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Libby Heil added 11 rebounds and 10 points for the winners (4-5).

For Silver Creek, Sarah Adams had 16 points and Kennedy Eggleston had four rebounds.
