Chester Edwin Crandall

MAYVILLE - Chester Edwin Crandall, 75, of Mayville, died unexpectedly Monday (Jan. 4, 2016) at his residence.

He was born June 3, 1940, in Mayville, N.Y., the son of Sidney and Mildred Swanson Crandall.

Prior to retirement in 1993, he was employed as superintendent by the village of Mayville. He served in the U.S. Army (Jamestown Reserve Unit) as sergeant from 1961-67. He joined the Mayville Volunteer Fire Department as a young man and answered most calls with the fire departments tanker truck.

Chester completed his service with the status of exempt fireman.

From 1959-67, he worked for Gordon's Chevrolet as a mechanic and then manager of that facility. Chester was also employed part-time for 10 years as a village of Mayville patrolman.

After joining Peacock Masonic Lodge he joined the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Sergeant of Arms from 1980-82. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 300 Illinois. Chester was also a member of the Mayville American Legion and the Mayville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Survivors are a son, Barry (Michelle) Crandall of Mayville, N.Y.; a daughter, Kelly (Gabe) Crandall Morell of Frankfort, Ill.; five grandchildren: Chadwick (Brittany) Crandall of Mayville, N.Y., Joshua Crandall of Mayville, N.Y., Brianna Morell of Estero, Fla. Brooke Morell of Frankfort, Ill., and Brady Morell of Frankfort, Ill.; one great- grandson, James Crandall of Mayville, N.Y.; one sister, Joyce (Carl) Crandall Kaufman, Edgewater, Fla.; a niece, Barbara Kaufman-Martin of Somersworth, N.H.; a nephew, Dennis Hawley of Mayville; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Swanson Crandall; and his niece/goddaughter, Debra Kaufman Deloe of Edgewater, Fla.

All memorials can be made to the Mayville Volunteer Fire Department

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.

No calling hours will be observed.
