FREDONIA (Jan. 28) - "Old-time wrestling" was back at the Fredonia gymnasium as the Hillbillies upended the Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds, 47-33, in CCAA Division 1 high school wrestling.

"It was very well wrestled by both teams," Fredonia coach Joe Santilli said. "We expected nothing less from (Chautauqua Lake coach) Brad Rowe's team. They are always tough. We have been looking forward to this match for a couple weeks. It was intense. We had a nice crowd. It was good old-time wrestling."

The event started at 113 pounds where Giovani Russo earned a decision over Austin Bourgeois, 5-0.

The win avenged two previous losses for Russo. Bourgeois is also a returning state qualifier runner up from 2015.

"It was an inspired match and it really set the tone for the night," Santilli said. "That was a coin-toss match. Gio has been wrestling strong and is getting better and better. This is a breakthrough win."

At 120, Fredonia's Ben McKelvey earned a pin over Trey Hoyt in 57 seconds.

Fredonia's Jakeb Kelly earned a 9-5 decision over Jim Wolfe at 138.

"Jakeb gave us an outstanding effort," Santilli raved. "Jim Wolfe is a solid wrestler and Jakeb found a way to pull it out. Jakeb tied it up, 5-5, and got four big back points to win. That was a big win."

Dakota Gardner earned a 17-1 technical fall over Armando Arce at 152. Teammate Nick Gloff picked up a pin at 195 as he stopped Kendell Carlson at 2:38. Also getting a six-point pin for Fredonia was Dylan Halas (285) and Dalton Gardner (99).

"I can't say enough about the effort from our whole team, top to bottom," Santilli said. "Even in defeat, we had great efforts. It was a highly competitive match."

The Thunderbirds had some solid showings of their own as Kale Gilbert pinned Tanner Davis in 1:11 of their 145-pound match.

At 182, Tommie Adolf pinned Brandon Cole at the 3:52 mark. Meanwhile, at 106, Jake Sieberg earned a pinfall over Brandon Wallace at 4:44.

It was the last regular season dual meet for both teams as they prepare for the Class Tournament which will be held Saturday, Feb. 6.
