Marilyn Vanderkooi

Marilyn Jean Vanderkooi 83, of 8747 W. Main St. Clymer, New York, formerly of Panama, Died Thursday, January 28th at St. Vincent's Hospital after suffering a stroke.

She was born on April 3, 1932 in Dunkirk, NY to the late Frederick Goldberg and Allene Goldberg Jern.

She graduated from Clymer Central School in 1949. And worked as a secretary for Vanderkooi & Reardon Construction Company and as an elementary secretary at Panama Central School before moving to Tyler, Texas.

Marilyn was a member of the Panama Methodist Church where she and Dutch celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002. She was a member of the Minerva Library Club and served on the Board of Trustees. She also was a member of the Harmony Senior Citizens. She and Dutch provided a home for foster children for 16 years. Upon returning from Texas, she enjoyed making candles and greeting customers in her daughter's store at Candle-Escents.

She is survived by her daughters, Denise (Geary) TeWinkle of Clymer with whom she make her home, Rhonda (Jim) Dorsey of Ravenna, Texas; 3 grandchildren; Dr. Kathryn (Marshall) Gilmore of Houston Texas; Michael TeWinkle of Ashville and Michelle TeWinkle of Jamestown, and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer "Dutch" Vanderkooi whom she married December 20, 1952 and died in 2009. Her brother, John Goldberg of North Clymer and an infant brother and sister and her step-father John Jern.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date and at the convenience of the family where she will be buried with her husband in Panama.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Panama Methodist Church of the Sherman, Clymer or Panama fire departments. The family would like to thank these fire departments for their compassionate care.

Arrangements are being handled by the Spitzer Funeral Home, Clymer.
