Sherman native Swanson runs for District Attorney

February 11, 2016
Westfield Republican

Acting District Attorney Patrick Swanson has made it official by announcing his candidacy for a full 4-year term for Chautauqua County District Attorney in the Nov. 8 General Election.

"I am currently the Acting District Attorney of Chautauqua County, having replaced The Honorable David Foley who vacated the office to become the Chautauqua County Court Judge. I'm married to Dr. Natalie (Guiffreda) Swanson who is a practicing Optometrist at Biondolillo Eye Care in Hamburg. We live in Fredonia with our two young children.

"I'm a lifelong Chautauqua County resident, growing up in Sherman and graduating from Sherman High School. My parents are Melford and Mary Swanson of Sherman. I have two brothers, Nolan Swanson of Westfield and Ryan Swanson of North Clymer, who both own and operate Pinehurst Golf Course in Westfield, and a sister, Lesley Stamper of Atlanta, GA. My wife grew up in Ashville with her parents Cindy and the late Robert "Bob" Guiffreda. Natalie has a brother, Tony Guiffreda of Maple Springs and a sister, Laurie Sicard of Lafayette, LA. My father, "Mel", has coached high school basketball coach at Sherman High School since 1977. He has been the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 266 president for over 20 years and he was also the Sherman's Teachers union president for a number of years.

"The majority of my legal experience is in the area of criminal law. After graduating from Wake Forest University with a degree in Physics, I later attended the University of Memphis Law School earning a Juris Doctorate degree. I have been hired and trained by some of the best trial lawyers from Tennessee to New York. I've worked closely with William "Bill" Massey (Memphis, TN), Mark Mahoney (Buffalo, NY) and David Foley. Both Mark and Bill served together on the National Board of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2005-2008 and were excellent mentors. I have been involved, both as lead counsel and assistant counsel, in trials for numerous major felony cases, many of them murder cases. For nearly the last five years I've prosecuted thousands of cases in western New York and Chautauqua County.

"I am running to remain as the Chautauqua County District Attorney because we need someone who understands the problems that permeate throughout our county. Having been an Assistant District Attorney, and now the Acting District Attorney, I've seen firsthand what is happening to the citizens of our county. I see so many young people in this county struggling with their addiction to drugs, honest folks becoming victims of property crimes, and women and children suffering through domestic and sexual abuse. This needs to stop and we need to work together to keep Chautauqua County safe for our families. My wife and I chose to live in Chautauqua County because we want our kids to grow up in close-knit communities like we didin safe homes, safe schools and on safe streets. I want what every Chautauqua County resident wants: a great place to live.

"I'm committed to seeking justice for the people of Chautauqua County. Like you, I want to play an active role in making my community, county and state a safer, better place to raise a family, run a business, and forge a future filled with unlimited promise. As your District Attorney, I will work tirelessly to preserve the Chautauqua County that we know is an amazing place to live.

"I am a registered Democrat, but I am not political and I am not a politician. Thus, I will be seeking all major party lines in my effort to continue serving the people of Chautauqua County," concluded Swanson.
