Report lists median salaries for teachers at area school districts

Cassadaga Valley Central School District has the sixth highest median salary for teachers in Upstate New York, according to a report from Buffalo Business First.

The median salary for a teacher at Cassadaga Valley was reported as $79,855, the highest in Chautauqua County.

The median is the midpoint which means half of the teachers in a district have a higher salary and the other half have a lower salary.

The rankings included a full listing of the 451 school districts in Upstate New York.

The figures were provided from the New York State Education Department for 2015. However, if a district did not report updated salary information, the most recently reported figures were substituted, according to Buffalo Business First.

According to Buffalo Business First's annual 2015 Schools Guide, the figure for Cassadaga's median salary is slightly lower than the 2014 figure, which was $83,399.

The second area school district on the list was Westfield Academy and Central School with a ranking of No. 17. The median salary was listed at $71,440 for Westfield teachers, which was reported as the same in the Buffalo Business First 2015 Guide for 2014.

Fredonia Central School District is the next local school district on the list with a ranking of No. 23 and a median salary of $70,550. This is a slight increase from 2014, which was reported as $70,100 in the 2015 Schools Guide.

At No. 32, Ellicottville Central School District reported a $68,031 median salary for its district teachers. This figure is slightly lower than the 2014 figure of $68,467 in the Schools Guide.

Other area districts did not fare as well in the rankings as the next school district listed was Panama Central School District at No. 90. The median teacher salary was reported as $62,812.

The 2015 Schools Guide reported the median salary for Panama as $62,112.

Jamestown Public School District was given a ranking of No. 173 with a median salary of $58,668. The same figure was reported in the 2015 Schools Guide for 2014.

According to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the average salary for teachers in New York state is $75,279.

The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reports the average annual wage for elementary school teachers excluding special education teachers is $56,830, while middle school teachers' average annual wage is $57,620. Secondary school teachers', aside from special education and career/technical teachers, is $59,330.
