BUFFALO (Feb. 18) - The No. 5 Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds used a fast start to take down the No. 4 Olmstead Lady Owls, 53-27, in the quarterfinals of the C-1 girls high school basketball playoffs.

"We got a pretty good scouting report and we felt confident going into this game," Chautauqua Lake coach Eric Schuster said. "Part of my message was how important it was to jump out to a quick start. In the first two minutes, we were up, 11-0. It kind of worked out the way I had hoped."

Part of the reason for the 11-0 run was the shooting of Sam Bauer, who drained consecutive 3-pointers on the team's first two possessions. Gleason finished with nine points, all coming via 3-pointers. The Lady Thunderbirds led 17-4 after the first quarter and 30-9 at halftime, and never looked back.

Lakin Gustafson had 10 points for Chautauqua Lake.

"I told the kids when your name is called, you have to produce in some way - whether it's scoring or defense," Schuster continued. "Lakin came in and got a couple quick baskets for us. We felt we could work the ball into the post and that's where we would get opportunities. As soon as Lakin came into the game, she got touches early and she provided a spark off the bench in terms of scoring for us.

Katie Fardink contributed in the win with nine points while Tayler Phelps had 12 rebounds and six assists. Jesse Zenns had four blocks for the winners, who were set to face top-seeded Allegany-Limestone Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Jamestown Community College in the semifinals.
