CL’s Phelps, Pope named to CCAA Division 1 West First Teams

Chautauqua Lake's Devin Pope and Taylor Phelps were named to the First Teams in their CCAA?Division 1 West basketball leagues.

Pope, a junior, had 17 points a game. Fellow junior Phelps put up 13.7 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game for the Lady Thunderbirds.

In the boys' division, Chautauqua Lake's Carter Davidson earned Second Team honors. The senior had 14.5 points a contest. Aaron Swan, a junior, was an Honorable Mention sleection.

Chautauqua Lake's Jesse Zenns (sophomore) and Samantha Bauer (junior) received Honorable Mention nods on the girls' side.

The Olean Huskies won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B boys basketball championship over the weekend, and Elijah Ramadhan, a key player to that run, was selected as the CCAA Division 1 West league Most Valuable Player.

The senior averaged 15.3 points per game during the regular season, and also hauled down 7.9 rebounds a game.

Olean coach Jeff Anastasia was named the league Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskies to a 12-0 league record, and ultimately a 27-0 record.

Also for Olean, junior Ben Eckstrom and senior Ben Cavana were selected to the First Team. Eckstrom averaged 16.2 points a game and 5.8 rebounds a game while Cavana scored 10.1 points a game and dished out 3.4 assists per game.

The Fredonia Hillbillies were well represented, led by seniors Jarod Burmaster and Patrick Moore, with First Team nods. Burmaster had 13.3 points a game and 5.3 assists while Moore averaged 18 points a game and 6.3 boards per contest.

Dunkirk's Rashad Brown heads the list of Second Team All-Stars. The 6-foot-5 senior averaged 14.7 points a game and 10.8 rebounds a game.

Fredonia senior Eric Swoyer averaged 13.5 points a game and 6.3 rebounds a game to make the Second Team. Davidson, Olean's Monty Shoemaker (11.8 points a game) and Southwestern's Ben Burk (15.2 points a game and 6.0 rebounds a game) round out the Second Team members.

Olean's Zach Ryan received the Sportsmanship award and Dunkirk's Chad Butts was honored with the Bryon Norton Award.

Maple Grove: Pat Nelson (senior) and Michael Welch (senior)

Falconer: Sean Nord (senior) and Trevor Dykstra (senior)

Olean: Derek Schmidt (senior)

Southwestern: Niko Pannes (junior)

Fredonia's Hannah Cybart was named the CCAA West 1 girls basketball Most Valuable Player. Cybart, a junior, averaged 15.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this year, helping the Lady Hillbillies to a birth in the Section 6 Class B-2 semifinals.

Named to the First Team were Fredonia's Madison Abram (senior, 10.9 ppg, 7.9 rpg), Falconer's Baileigh Carter (senior, 16 ppg, 12 rpg), Phelps and Olean's Sara Pfeiffer (freshman, 22 ppg) and Chantel Singleton (junior, 8 ppg, 9 rpg).

On the Second Team were Southwestern seniors Diamond Fedrick and Sally Rudny, Maple Grove's Ellie Lockwood, a senior, and junior Caleigh Swanson. Falconer senior Kelly Keefe rounded out the Second-Team selections.

Honorable mention nominations went to Dunkirk seniors Quinn Bankoski and Natasha Colon, Fredonia junior Caitlin Cybart, Chautauqua Lake's Zenns and Bauer, Falconer senior Emma Steele and Maple Grove seniors Alexis Hallberg and Morgan Lehman. Also earning honorable mention nods were Southwestern senior Maddie Sullivan and Olean's Courtney Martin (senior), Bridgid Taylor (senior) and Gabby Pfeiffer (junior).
