Velma Ottaway

"Together again." On March 25th 2016, Velma West Ottaway passed away unexpectedly at her home in Sherman.

Velma was born Dec. 4, 1930 in Panama. Velma grew up in Corry, Pa. and graduated from Corry High School in 1949. After graduation she worked for Guy W. Bennink insurance company in Corry, Pa. Velma married Harry Ottaway in 1950 and went on to spend 63 years of a loving marriage together. Along the way they had three children, Tamera, Daniel, and Gary.

Velma worked at DSS in Mayville for 21 years as they built their lives together with their three children in Sherman for the next 63 years. Velma enjoyed quilting, cooking, and entertaining, family and friends, along with many other hobbies. Velma and Harry traveled the country together during their golden years and bought a home in Lakeland, Fla. where they spent their winters for the last 15 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Tamera Ottaway, of Sherma, grandson, Chris Ottaway, of Sherman, granddaughter, Rachel Ottaway Reitz, of Ridgecrest, Calif. and great-grandson, Drake Ottaway, and great-granddaughter Maddison Ottaway; and by her sister Betty (Al) Larter, of Dade City, Fla.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Harry Ottaway, on May 6, 2014, and two sons, Gary Ottaway, Jan. 24, 2008, and Daniel Ottaway, Oct. 17, 2015.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family, no visitation will be observed.

Memorials may be made to the Stanley Hose Co. Fire Department PO Box 574, Sherman, NY 14781 or the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701.

Arrangements are being handled by the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman.
