Anderson tosses gem as Thunderbirds prevail

RIPLEY (April 18) - The Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds plated three runs in the fourth inning, and that was all pitcher Olivia Anderson needed in defeating Southwestern, 3-1, Monday in CCAA West 1 high school softball.

Olivia Anderson was the winning pitcher as she struck out 12, scattered three hits and had two walks and no earned runs. Her counterpart, Sydney Burke, was equally effective in the circle as she struck out nine, gave up just four and three walks.

Lakin Gustafson provided the offense with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the home team the lead it would never relinquish.

The Lady Trojans scored their lone run in the top of the first as Haley Burgeson crossed home plate.

Panama takes care of Westfield

PANAMA (April 18) - Francine Torres did the pitching while sisters Taylor and Madalyn Bowen provided the hitting as Panama raised its CCAA West 2 record to 4-0 with an 11-2 win over Westfield.

Torres hurled a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts, three walks and a hit battter while Taylor Bowen ripped three triples and Madalyn Bowen also had three hits with a two-run home run over the right-center field fence for the winners.

Tara Sweeney, Elle Angeletti and Marra Hovey had two hits in the winning attack.

Amy Meleen stroked two hits and Madison Abbey-Mott added a double in the loss.

Tofil, Westfield shut out Clymer

CLYMER (April 15) - Behind Laura Tofil's eight-strikeout, no-walk pitching, Westfield blanked Clymer, 9-0.

Sierra Brooker and Lindsey Songer each delivered two hits and Tofil hit a double in the win.

Sydney Beal had two hits for Clymer.

Panama rallies to beat Sherman

PANAMA (April 15) - By scoring eight runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth, undefeated Panama was able to rally for a 23-13 victory over Sherman.

Sherman was up, 10-6, when the Panthers struck for eight runs in the fourth inning.

Madalyn Bowen led the way with a two-run triple and a single, and Taylor Bowen and Elle Angeletti also had two hits in the 10-hit attack.

Francine Torres got the win in relief as she came in during Sherman's 10-run third. Danielle Aldrich and Kayla Spacht each singled home a run during the third inning and Aldrich ended up with two hits.

CV gets past Lady Wolverines

(April 14)- Cassadaga Valley's Alyssa Hahn and Westfield's Laura Tofil engaged in a pitcher's duel Thursday in a Division 2 West game.

In the end, it was Hahn's Cougars who came out victorious with a 2-0 victory over the Wolverines.

Hahn finished with 12 strikeouts while allowing no walks and five hits. Her counterpart, Tofil, had 13 strikeouts to just one walk and six hits.

The Cougars scored the only runs of the game in the third inning as Julie Schauman's two-run double plated Alexa Ruiz and Mikayla Falkner for the win.

The Wolverines received a triple from Amy Meleen and two singles from Kara Booker.

Panthers top Brocton, 12-4

PANAMA (April 14) - Francine Torres shined in the circle for Panama in Division 2 West girls softball Thursday afternoon.

Torres hurled a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and five walks as the Panthers downed Brocton, 12-4.

Taylor Bowen led the 18-hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a double, and Natalie Torres added three hits in the victory.

The third inning was the turning point for Panama, which trailed 3-2 at the time. The Panthers ignited with an eight-run, five-hit frame, led by a two-run home run by Abi Lisciandro and a two-run triple by Madalyn Bowen.

Lisciandro, Madalyn Bowen and Elle Angeletti each had two hits and Maci Johnson added a double for the Panthers.

Jen Potter recorded two singles and Jypsi Eidens belted a triple for Brocton (0-2).

Forestville defeats Sherman

FORESTVILLE (April 14) - The Forestville Lady Hornets took their first game of the season, beating the Sherman Lady Wildcats 13-0 Thursday in CCAA West 2 action.

Forestville pitcher Brooke Ostrye gave up just one hit, an Alissa Chase single in the sixth inning. The sophomore struck out 12 and walked two batters.

Danielle Aldrich took the loss for Sherman. She gave up nine hits, walked six and hit five batters, striking out three.

The Lady Hornets' Makenzie Press went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Lydia Burger went 2 for3. Julia Szoszorek had a double for an RBI.

Westfield edges Lady Hornets

FORESTVILLE (April 13) - Forestville ( left the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday, as the Lady Hornets fell to Westfield, 5-4, in the CCAA West 2 softball opener for both schools.

Emily Narraway had an RBI double to get the Lady Hornets on the board, before a three-run two-bagger off the bat of Chrissy Dean got Forestville to within one, 5-4. But winning pitcher Laura Tofil rebounded and recorded the final out to preserve the win. Tofil finished allowing four runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two.

Tofil helped her own cause at the dish as she went 4 for 4 with four RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the first and a three-run double in the second that gave the Lady Wolverines a 5-0 lead.

Brooke Ostrye suffered the loss in the circle as she allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out nine and walking six in a complete-game effort.
