Sherman Historical Society

The Steering Committee of the Sherman Historical Society met to conduct the business of the organization. Guides for the special tours by public and private school classes and home schooled children, senior citizen tours, and other groups prior to the Museum public opening in June was discussed. Anyone desiring to set up a special tour should contact Roberta Tenpas at 761 - 6659.

Further planning for the 70th Yorker Reunion to be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Yorker Museum also took place. This Reunion will be held on Sherman Day and promises to be a celebration of local history as well as an event to honor past Yorker members and their leaders. Four of the original Yorker members have been contacted to attend along with state, county and local dignitaries. There will be historical crafts demonstrated and good music playing between the three short ceremonies. The welcoming ceremony will be at 11 AM, a 12:30 ceremony will address the historic significance of the Yorker Museum and the Sherman Historical Society and the final ceremony at 2 PM will honor the Yorkers, their leaders, and community members who figured prominently in the establishment of the Yorker Museum.

New signs have been prepared and will be lettered for each of the seven buildings of the Yorker Museum on the Village Common. With the anticipated summer tourist season, spring clean up of the Yorker Museum and changing some of the displays will take place in early May.

The Steering Committee has been working on defining the organization's mission, purpose and goals, and operating structure. In an effort to make the public aware of the Historical Society and its sincere desire to expand the membership to include all those interested in the history and traditions of the Sherman area, discussion focused on how best to recruit members and utilize the talents and skills of people interested in the organization.

The Sherman Historical Society encourages anyone interested in the Sherman area and who would like more information about the organization to contact SHS President, Roberta Tenpas at 761 - 6659.
