Information on attractions available at Barcelona

May 12, 2016

Spring is here and summer is on the way - a promise that Chautauqua County keeps every year. And every year for the past two decades, volunteers have been manning the visitors' booth near the Dan Reed Pier to welcome and inform folks passing through our area about the many attractions available - parks, historical sights, restaurants, shops, and services. All offered with a smile, brochures, local knowledge, and often with a free bottle of Welch's grape juice.

The big news this year is that all of those services, sponsored by the Westfield/ Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, will be dispensed from the Barcelona Lighthouse keeper's cottage. There are plans to include some displays of historical relevance as well.

While the lighthouse itself will not be open to the public, the stone cottage and grounds are now part of the State of New York Parks system. This is in keeping with a renewed interest in developing the area through tourism and a revitalized waterfront.

The Barcelona lighthouse is shown.

These are exciting developments, and while there are a number of devoted volunteers, hours may need to be expanded, and new faces would be more than welcome. Opening date is planned for June 6th. Hours have been seven days a week, morning shift from 10:30 to 1:30, afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30. A few more volunteers would allow more flexibility in scheduling, and new ideas. If you are interested, call Linda at 269- 4604 or Lois at 326 - 6982.
