Golf: Maytum finishes in top 25 of NY qualifier

GRAND ISLAND (May 16) - Cassadaga Valley's Anthony Miller and Chautauqua Lake's Kole Maytum finished in the top 25 of Monday's high school golf state qualifier at River Oaks Golf Club.

Randolph's Nolan Ditcher placed second and will represent Section VI at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament which will be held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, on Cornell University, June 3-6.

After 18 holes Monday, the top 23 golfers played nine more holes to determine the top nine.

Ditcher and Ben Reichert of Williamsville North were tied after 18 holes, as they each shot a 74. However, on the final nine holes, Reichert distanced himself with a 38, while Ditcher shot a 43.

Meanwhile, Miller, who finished 14th, shot an 82 through 18 holes and shot a 42 on the final nine holes. Like Miller, Maytum shot an 82 through 18 holes. Both Miller and Maytum shot a 40 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine.

And while Miller shot a 42 on the final nine holes, Maytum shot a 49, to finish 22nd.

Maytum winner of league qualifying event

FINDLEY LAKE (May 11) - Kole Maytum led a group of seven Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West golfers at the Section VI state qualifier after his 9-over-par 81 at the league qualifier held at Peek'n Peak Resort's Lower Course.

Maytum, golfing for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield, won by one shot over Silver Creek's Zach Rybak. Cassadaga Valley sent both Titus Miller (83) and Anthony Miller (84) while Louis Markham represented Forestville/Pine Valley after his 84. Sherman/Clymer/Panama's Cole Munson fired an 87 for sixth place while Maple Grove's Carson Crist earned the last qualifier spot with an 88.

FINDLEY LAKE (May 10) - Clymer/Sherman/Panama edged Chautauqua Lake, 30-28, in Division 2 West golf on the Lower Course at Peek'n Peak Resort.

Kole Maytum of Chautauqua Lake was the medalist with a 11-over-par 47. Cole Munson and Caleb Burick of C/S/P had 48s.

C/S/P: Cole Munson 48, Caleb Burick 48, Chance Meeder 51, Heath Reed 55, Albert Bensink 57, Jack Payne 62.

Chautauqua Lake: Kole Maytum 47, Joey Parker 49, Justin Weimer 53, Tom Gurga 61, Parker Gleason 70, Christian Akin 73.

Pinehurst Retiree Golf

Three strokes was the difference between first and last place teams. The first place team of Bill Christ, Pete Miller, Al Muck and Doug Rothwell finished at four under par. Second place after a tie breaker on number four went to Bill Cole, Paul Sears, Jeff Wagner and George Tanner at three under. Also at three under the team of Rick Lawson, Ray Lewis and Jim Higgenbothm were in third. Fourth place was the team of Dave Holser, Chris Kolpien and Lou Barresi after the tie breaker on number two at two under par. Also at two under par was the team of Todd Swanson, Dennis Shively and Vinny Patternosh. After another tie breaker on hole number two the team of Al Easton, Bill Shields, Jim Sudal and Sam Arcadipane were in sixth place. In seventh was the team of Trenny Jordan, Bob Lewis, Gene Noble and Bob Richmond.

Individual honors went to Ray Lewis - longest putt made on No. 1, Jeff Wagner - closest to the pin on No. 4 and Gene Noble - closest to the pin on No. 7.

Low gross scores: Lori Foster 46, Pat Thompson 47, Carolyn Rawlinson 51, Trudy Gollnitz 51. Low net scores: Thompson 24, Foster 25, Gollnitz 26, Kim Tiberio 31, Phyllis East 33, Rawlinson 33.
