YWCA withdraws from pact on Head Start classrooms

May 25, 2016
Westfield Republican

The board of directors of YWCA Westfield voted on May 17 to seek to withdraw from the contract with Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. formed to establish Early Head Start classrooms at the YWCA facility at 58 South Portage Street in Westfield. The project budget had grown from $208,000 to over the $250,000 mark at which the federal government would impose a lien against the property. Efforts to reduce costs below the $250,000 threshold called for undesirable design modifications and the use of lower quality building materials and fixtures.

YWCA President Renee Miller believes the vote represents the board's commitment to limiting risk and ensuring the integrity of the facility. "We are honored to have been chosen as a potential site for one of the Early Head Start programs and we hope another location can be developed," she said.
