Gordon M. “Bumpa” Van Every

Gordon M. Van Every, 78 of Sherman, NY passed away peacefully, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Gordon was born on June 29, 1938 to the late Water H. and Jane E. Simmons Van Every Sr. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Walter H. Van Every Jr. and a sister, Dorothy J. Van Every Bush.

Gordon proudly served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1959. He served on the USS Glennon DD840 as a machinist mate 3rd Class. Shortly after his discharge he met and married the love of his life, Marsha A. Hornstrom, they were married on June 4, 1960. Together they had six children.

Gordon was a truck driver for many years with Allied Van Lines, Blodgett and Chautauqua Storage. He enjoyed working at Paradise Bay Campground and for the Village of Sherman Sewer plant.

Gordon was an avid outdoorsman. He loved deer hunting (with his son Duane and his brother Rich), ice fishing, gardening, raising cows (a couple at a time) and softball.

His greatest gift to his family is love. His family was his greatest joy. After the birth of his first grandchild he became known as "Bumpa" to all.

Gordon will be dearly missed by his wife, Marsha A. Hornstrom Van Every; his six children: Duane (Tracy) Van Every of Salisbury, NC, Rhonda (Jim) Maynard of Ashville, NY., Sharyn (Carl) Myers, Judy (Chris) Card, Wendy (Tim) Aldrich, and Brenda (Tom) DeKoning, all of Sherman, NY; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Van Every of Jamestown, NY and Roger Van Every of Lakewood, NY; a sister, Donna Lindstrom of Ripley, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Sept. 8, at the First Baptist Church of Sherman, 113 Church St., Sherman, NY.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 at the church, with Pastor Tim Minge, officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Stanley Hose Co. PO Box 574, Sherman, NY 14781.
