Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club honors its Scholars of the Month

October 5, 2016
Westfield Republican

Leadership, volunteer service and academic achievement are some of the common aspects that three local high school senior students share. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville that was held at The Parkview in Westfield, Maddison Knapp of Westfield Academy & Central School, Molly Kucharski of Brocton Central School, and Taylor Phelps of Chautauqua Lake Central School were given recognition as "Scholars of the Month" for September 2016. A fourth student, one from Sherman Central School and who was unable to attend, will be announced and honored at a later date.

The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville involves the above named four component school districts by asking their administrators and counselors to select one high school student for each of the ten months of September through June to be their "Scholars of the Month" representatives and to provide some biographical information about these students. The honorees and their parents are then invited by Dan Smith, this club's Youth Services Chair, to attend one meeting of the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville.

Maddison Knapp, a senior of Westfield Academy and Central School, is the daughter of Brenda Paternosh of Westfield. In addition to taking many challenging courses, such as Advanced Placement Micro Economics, and demonstrating academic success, Maddison participated on several athletic teams. She played modified and varsity soccer and currently serves as captain of her soccer team. She also participated in junior varsity and varsity basketball and varsity track. In her junior year Maddison represented WACS in the state championship in the 400 meter hurdles. Last year Maddison served as caption of both the basketball and track teams, and she will serve in the same capacity this year.
