FWB picks up non-league win over St. Mary’s

Fredonia/Westfield/Brocton used a solid running game Friday to take down St. Mary's, 27-12, in non-league high school football.

Joell Colon led the rushing attack with 132 yards and a touchdown. In all, FWB rushed for 288 yards.

"They were running strong to the hole and the results were there," FWB coach Mike Marshall said. "That was nice to see. We had some good ball control. We were able to run down the field in the third and fourth quarters. The backs were hitting the holes hard."

However, things could not have started off more poorly for FWB. After St. Mary's scored on the opening drive, Colon returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but it was called back on a holding penalty.

On FWB's first play from scrimmage, they scored again on a double pass. However, that, too, was also called back due to offsides.

Fortunately, FWB was able to put those misfortunes behind itself. Quarterback Max Bates was 6 for 16 with a touchdown while also rushing for 60 yards of his own.

"Max Bates ran the option very well," Marshall said. "That was very successful for us. He was doing well reading their (defensive end). Our offensive line was opening up the holes. That, combined with Max's ability to read on the option, made us successful."

Colon scored a touchdown while Mike Polleto was on the receiving end of a touchdown reception for the winners.

Defensively, outside linebacker Jake Green led the way with 10 tackles while safety Reid Tarnowski made eight stops.

"It's been a rough couple weeks," Marshall said of the losing streak. "It was nice being able to play someone we were able to be successful against. We have a couple hard games coming up with Pioneer and Dunkirk. We will have to pick it up if we want to compete with those two teams."
