Arleen Rubin

Arleen Rubin, age 88, of Westfield, NY, died Monday, October 24, 2016 at Absolut Care of Westfield.

Arleen was born on February 10, 1928 in New York City, NY, the daughter of the late Kaufman and Ella (Katz) Grushka. She married George Rubin in New York City in 1948.

Arleen was a graduate of City College of New York with a degree in Education. She was a teacher in New York City and in Herkimer NY, before moving to Westfield in 1962. She taught 3rd and 4th grades in Westfield and received a master's degree in reading education from SUNY Fredonia. She then became coordinator of the reading program at Westfield Academy and Central School. She retired from WACS in 1984 after teaching there for 20 years.

She is survived by her two sons, Howard Paul (Karin) Rubin of Austin, TX and Mitchell (Mara) Rubin of Westfield. She also has four granddaughters, Hanna and Sofia Rubin of Westfield and Rachel and Jennifer Rubin of Austin, TX.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Rubin, who died on August 25, 2015.

All services will be private with burial will be in Willowbrook Cemetery, Dunkirk, NY.

The family requests that memorial donations be sent to The Patterson Library, 40 So. Portage Street, Westfield, NY 14787.

The family found this poem from one of her students among Arleen's personal belongings:

"A thank you poem for Mrs. Rubin:

I like the way you listen carefully.

I like the way you let me go into the brown spelling book.

I like the way your eyes get sparkley when you talk to me.

I like the stories you read to us.

I like the way you touch me when we talk.

I like the way you take us to the gym and play with us.

I like the bag you gave me.

Most of all I like you!
