The Sherman Central School District established a Wall of Fame during the 2008-2009 school year. The wall was created to recognize the influence of certain alumni on the community, the school district, or society in general. Friends, family members, and community members attend the induction ceremony each year to honor the inductees.

Jack Dean, of the Class of 1937, was the youngest person to graduate from Sherman Central School having received his diploma at the age of 15. Dean taught business and dairy farming skills to veterans returning from World War II. He, and four other men started Peek 'n Peak Ski Resort.

Dean and his wife operated a store in Chautauqua for thirty years, while raising four children.

He has a passion for history and for sailing; he is a member of the Findley Lake-Mina, Yorkers, and Chautauqua County Historical Societies.

Dean was a crewmember on historic ships for fourteen years, including being the oldest crewmember on the reconstructed US Brig Niagara. He has also served on many boards, including Milk for Health, Chautauqua County Visitors' Bureau, Farmers' Mill, PA Inventors Association, and Chautauqua Lake Historic Vessels. Dean has perfect weekly attendance at the Rotary Club for fifty years and is still working, at the age of 95, to keep the French Creek Watershed clean.

Gretchen Selfridge is a 1982 graduate of Sherman Central School and is famous for being the only female executive officer at Chipotle. Gretchen started in the restaurant business when she accepted a job as a part-time hostess in Mayville, NY at the age of 16. She has since worked in restaurants from Denver, CO to Washington, DC.

When Selfridge started her career at Chipotle, she was the manager of the company's second restaurant. She is now one of Chipotle's top executives and the only female executive officer. Selfridge oversees half of Chipotle's 1,800 restaurants and she reports directly to the CEO. She has been featured in several magazines, including, Fortune, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan, and has been an inspiration to many young women across the country.

This year's ceremony will be unique not only because of the induction of an entire basketball team, but also due to the fact that all Sherman Central School graduates who served in the military will be remembered. A special servicemen's plaque will honor all of the district's veterans.

Lists of noteworthy individuals or groups and their achievements, displayed in a hall or museum, have existed since the early 1800's. In the United States, the term hall of fame became popular after the Hall of Fame for Great Americans was established at Bronx community college in New York City in 1900.

The concept of the Wall of fame, in which honorees' plaques are posted on a wall, began in U.S. secondary schools in the late 20th century, as administrators and alumni realized that many of their institutions' graduates deserved recognition for their accomplishments. Many high schools across the country established Walls of Fame in conjunction with their centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial celebrations.
