Salvatore M. "Sy" Caruso

PORTLAND - Salvatore M. "Sy" Caruso, age 86, of Woleben Rd., Portland, formerly of Westfield, died Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Robert Packer Hospital of Sayre, PA as a result of an automobile Accident.

Sy was born on April 22, 1930 in Westfield, NY, the son of the late Michael and Libbie (Scarlata) Caruso.

A Westfield/Portland resident all his life, Sy, had graduated from Westfield Academy in 1948 and enlisted in the US Army Signal Corp. where he served from 1948 until 1951 earning the rank of sergeant.

He had been employed as an Insurance Agent for the former Chautauqua General Insurance Co. (Tradition Agency), where he was Vice President and part owner. Sy was a former Patrolman for the Westfield Police Dept. and was a former Village Trustee. Sy was also a member of the Deutchmeister Band for many years playing the Trumpet. He ran the family grape farm on Woleben road for over 30 years, and enjoyed hunting, bowling, golf and music. He spent many hours moving his "acres and acres of lawn."

Mr. Caruso was a member of St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, Council 3100 Knights of Columbus, the Wm. P Jackway Post 6764 VFW and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 118 all of Westfield, as well as the J.W. Dill Post 434 American Legion of Brocton.

Mr. Caruso was also a Current member of the Board of Directors of Chautauqua Patrons Insurance Co. and was formerly on the Executive Committee of National Grape Cooperative.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Theo (Moorhead) Caruso, whom he married on Nov. 5, 1955, his two daughters: Suzanne M. Caruso of Tampa, FL and Annette M. Caruso of Dunkirk, NY, and one son: John (Deborah) M. Caruso of Erie, PA. Sy was the very proud grandfather of: Nicholas J. and Alex J. Caruso both of Erie, PA and Cory J. Caruso, of Pittsburgh, Shawn R. Hilton of Westfield and Ryan M. Vazquez of Chicago, IL. He is further survived by his sister, Charlotte (Donald) Douglass of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by his great granddaughters, Chloe and Delia Caruso of Erie.

He was preceded in death by his 2 sisters, Rosmarie Marsala. Ann Polichetti .

Friends may call at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield on Monday, December 26, 2016 from 1 PM until 3 PM. At Sy's request all Funeral Services will be private. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery.
