December’s Westfield Fire Department summary

January 11, 2017
Westfield Republican

The Fire Department of Westfield responded to 53 calls for service during the month of December 2016. Of those calls, 39 were for emergency medical services (EMS), with 21 of those calls being within the Village of Westfield and ten of them within the town of Westfield. There were eight EMS responses to Absolut Care.

There were seven fire calls during the month of December. Two of the fire calls occurred in the Village. Both calls were at Absolut Care, 26 Cass Street. The calls were for a fire alarm activation set off by a nebulizer and a plug in wall smoking. There were four fire calls reported in the Town. Firefighters responded to an alarm activation from dust at 8288 Route 20, a chimney fire at 7801 Jamestown Street, a fire in a wall at 5862 Ogden Road, and smoke coming from a building (truck exhaust) at Add Lumber, 7587 Route 20. There was one mutual aid response in December to North East, PA for structures on fire.

The Fire Department of Westfield responded to one motor vehicle accident in December. This was a mutual aid response to Ripley on Route 76.

There were three service calls in December. They were for an electric pole leaning on wires at Route 20 and Creamery Road, and two local transports.

There were three false alarm calls this month all at Absolut Care, 26 Cass Street due to a malfunctioning alarm system.

The 53 responses in November was an increase from last month's total of 46 responses. The Fire Department of Westfield responded to a total of 553 incidents in 2016. This was a decrease of 169 incidents when compared to the 722 responses in 2015 (The large number of responses in 2015 was a direct result of the catastrophic flooding which occurred on July 13, 2015 in Westfield).

The members of the Fire Department and the Westfield Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Association would like to express our sincere thanks to our community for the large turnout at the memorial service recognizing the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor on December 7th. It was our pleasure to sponsor this service. The Fire Department of Westfield was honored to have had many veterans in our ranks over the years that served during World War II.
